The AFAS Knowledge Exchange, Engagement & Dissemination week took place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 13–17 October 2025. During this week, the AFAS team from the University of Cologne, the University of Bonn, and Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny convened at the University of Nairobi (UoN). AFAS supports highly motivated graduates who are interested in addressing climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development in African savannas through Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and science–policy–practice interfaces.

Exploring Profitable Nature-Based Solutions: AFAS Stakeholder Workshops 2023 in Abidjan and Nairobi

The AFAS team gathered for the second edition of stakeholder workshops on November 28 at the Hôtel Famille Mondiale in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire and on December 14 at the Mövenpick Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. The workshops had the theme “Achieving Profitable Nature-based Solutions for Climate Change Adaptation and Biodiversity Conservation.” They aimed to bring together stakeholders from science, policy, and practice to explore avenues for making Nature-based Solutions (NbS) not only profitable but also financially sustainable.

Interdisciplinary workshop on Interactions between Humans and Wildlife

Human life and wildlife converge steadily, resulting, among others, in new pathogen spillovers. The drivers for increasing human-animal interactions and its resultant pathogen spillovers are climate change, hunting, trading animals, and keeping animals as livestock or pets. Land use changes lead to an increasing encroachment of agriculture, including crop cultivation, in forests, savannas, and other biodiverse natural habitats. To prevent pathogen spillovers – or, at least, be prepared for future spillovers – activities of both humans and wildlife have to be considered.
