African Climate and Environment Centre – Future African Savannas (AFAS)

The African Climate and Environment Centre – Future African Savannas (AFAS) invites applications for two (2) Postdoctoral Researcher positions and one (1) PhD position hosted at our partner institutions in East and West Africa.

AFAS is a DAAD-funded Centre of Excellence working across African and European universities to generate evidence-based solutions for climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable management of African savanna ecosystems.

1. Postdoctoral Fellow in Nature-based Solutions – University of Nairobi, Kenya. 

The University of Nairobi invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow in Nature-based Solutions under the AFAS project. The position will be based at the Institute for Climate Change and Adaptation, with academic affiliation to the Department of Earth and Climate Sciences, and will involve fieldwork in project areas.

The Fellow will contribute to interdisciplinary research on climate change, ecosystems, and livelihoods in African savannas, support high-quality scientific publications, and engage in policy-relevant knowledge generation aligned with the University’s Postdoctoral Training Policy.

Key Information

  • Contract duration: 2 years (renewable once)

  • Location: Nairobi, Kenya (with fieldwork)

  • Research focus: Nature-based Solutions, climate change adaptation, ecosystems and livelihoods

  • Eligibility: PhD obtained within the last five (5) years

2. Postdoctoral Researcher in Nature-based SolutionsFélix Houphouët-Boigny University (UFHB) -Côte d’Ivoire.

The WASCAL/CEA-CCBAD Centre at Félix Houphouët-Boigny University (UFHB) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher specialising in Nature-based Solutions to support the implementation of AFAS activities in West Africa.

The successful candidate will provide scientific and technical input to AFAS research, contribute to academic and capacity-building activities at the Centre, and participate in field missions within project implementation areas.

  • Contract duration: 2 years (renewable once, subject to performance and funding)

  • Location: Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire (with field missions)

  • Research focus: Nature-based Solutions, climate adaptation, biodiversity, socio-ecological resilience

3. PhD Fellowship in Nature-based Solutions – Félix Houphouët-Boigny University (UFHB), Côte d’Ivoire

The WASCAL / CEA-CCBAD Centre at Félix Houphouët-Boigny University (UFHB) invites applications for one (1) fully funded PhD Fellowship in Nature-based Solutions under the African Climate and Environment Centre – Future African Savannas (AFAS) project.

The successful candidate will undertake interdisciplinary doctoral research on Nature-based Solutions for climate change adaptation and biodiversity conservation in West African savannas, contributing to AFAS research, training, and stakeholder engagement activities. The PhD will be hosted at UFHB or University Nangui Abrogoua (UNA), depending on research focus and supervisory alignment.
